Sense and centsability
October 27th 2008 11:06
Well this is just a little introduction to tell you what kind of things I’ll be posting on this site. As you may have guessed from my woefully pun-filled blog site name, it has to do with ta-da…Cheryl J’s version of budgeting.
As a bit of background, through circumstances completely out of my control, I’m poor. Not homeless poor but I do it tough. Around 10 years ago I got sick, incredibly – unable to work, barely able to function – sick. I lost my job, I lost my home but I didn’t lose my sense of humour or my ability to adapt. So I thought I’d share some of the things I’ve learned about how to live well when you barely have two cents to scrape together. Now unless you’re a high income earner with a large disposable income, everybody wants to save for something.
Now before you all start yawning and running for the hills, it will not be a dry and humourless ‘How to save your pennies’ blog in the strictest sense. I’ll be covering loads of topics that should be of interest to everyone and injecting my own warped sense of humour. There will be tips on how to get freebies, saving on credit card payments, buying a house, renting, sharing, eating out, going out, beauty, fashion, tech, lifestyle, entertainment, education with the occasional competition and giveaway thrown in for good measure. Some of the competitions and giveaways will be based in Australia but some will be open to everyone everywhere.
I live on a part-time income in a very middle of the road type job and I completely support myself. I also live in an extremely expensive city and I still manage to have fun, have nice things and live pretty well. That’s not to say I don’t struggle and sometimes it’s tough and there are times I’ve thrown my hands in the air with the drama queen arm across the face doing the ‘why me?’ bit but I’ve learned quite a few things along the way. I hope you’ll come along for the ride and benefit from my experience, research and some pretty ridiculous mistakes and stories that I have no problem sharing and humiliating myself with. And maybe, just maybe, you’ll learn stuff and have fun while saving some bucks.
Boring intro, but hopefully you won’t find the posts boring.
This blog means a lot to me. It’s something I’ve been wanting to do for a very long time and it’s something I feel passionate about. I hope my Orble friends will take a peek and help me start off. If I publish something you like, please share it. I also want people to share their own tips and if there is something you want to know about – ask! I really want to cover subjects that people want to know about.
So whether it’s finding a way to pay the rent and still have a social life while you’re a student or trying to balance a mortgage and family, saving for a special holiday or even saving to buy the latest gadgets or designer shoes. I hope to cover it all.
And from both Mr Spock and my total inner nerd, live long and prosper!

Just tell me how to stop shouting everyone when I'm out. Maybe I should stop drinking. Um, no you gotta come up with something other than that lol

I love tips on how to save money. I'm moving back to Sydney soon and hopefully to New York not long after that so goodness knows I'm gonna need all the advice I can get.

Hey Norm, careful with all that rubbing. I hear the shininess can make you go blind
Hello Cass, thanks for dropping by. I figure everyone likes to find ways to keep their money. I'm hoping everyone will relate, maybe not to every post but I hope to cover lots of areas so everyone will find something to suit. Thanks for the encouragement.
Hi Hatchy, maybe baby we can fill your pockets with more than lint

I'm gonna love this site! I think it's my Scottish ancestors back there, hoping I'll get back on the straight and narrow - money never lasts long enough and I write more poetry than things that will actually make me money!

Yes the Scots do have a certain reputation for keeping a close eye on the purse strings.
Glad you like what you see. Thanks for stopping by.
